Internet marketing can seem mystifying not only for beginners, but for moderately skilled internet marketers. With all the courses, forums, blogs, reports, seminars and teleconferences available to help people learn how to get traffic to their sites, it is one of the most overwhelmingly dense subjects on the internet.

Unfortunately, and this is perfectly true, most of the advice or “expert” tips are outdated or completely false. Since anyone can publish on the internet, you have a mixed bag of good information followed with much more bad information.

The mysticism of internet marketing is created largely by this glut of some good and mostly bad information. It makes the whole topic SEEM like rocket science when, in fact, much of what was true about internet marketing years ago is true today.

Most people think that since search engine marketing changes every five minutes, that ALL internet marketing tactics must have changed as much in the same amount of time. Not true.

The basics, like trading links, article syndication, testimonials, forum signatures, joint ventures, affiliate programs - most work as well today as they did years ago. That is, if you know how to value the work above for what it will truly do for your website traffic.

Funny thing is, no one places much value on the above tactics anymore because there is always some “new” tactic around the corner that claims the death of everything that came before it. And most people blindly follow that advice as if it were true.

Most of the time, this is to the detriment of their internet marketing efforts. The basics are what work all the time and what have always worked on the internet.

You can always experiment with new things, as long as you have not forgotten to do the basics. The basics proven to drive traffic, page rank, link popularity, and branding to your business.

Conservative, relevant reciprocal linking
Article syndication
Participation in your field and among your market (forums)
Blogging
Offline advertising
Non-reciprocal linking tactics
Press releases
…and many other proven methods.

Everything else is just a big experiment until proven to work over time. “Over time” being the operative words. Lots of flash in the pan crack pot schemes work for awhile. But most never stand the test of time.

Links from a widely syndicated article will never fade away, yet I see people chasing down fly-by-night linking pyramid schemes as if they truly believe something like that is a smart thing to base their internet business on!

Tens of thousands have walked away from their dreams, gone back to their depressing, predictable, slave-labor jobs never knowing how close they were to actually succeeding.

Good people have left this business proclaiming it an utter lie that any average person can make it with an internet business and an internet marketing plan.

I guess there is truth in that statement. Average people do in fact quit this business before they ever get started because average people fall for tricks and schemes that above average people avoid on their way to success.

If you have read this far, you are probably in the above average category. Why? Because average people would have take one look at the list of things I mentioned that are the bread and butter of internet marketing and saw nothing but hard work. And they’d be right!

Above average people don’t shy away from work though. I don’t know a single soul (and my rolodex has some of the biggest names in internet marketing in it) who got where they are today without a lot of hard work.

You can succeed in internet marketing if you are not afraid to work, and not constantly tempted by those who say you can succeed without it!

Focus on the basics of internet marketing and stay with them as you try new strategies. We all experiment. But successful internet marketers never leave their bread and butter tactics behind unless they cease to be effective.

Optimize your Real Estate Web Site

Web Content “MUST” Be unique Search Engines are alot like people. They are looking for relevant and interesting information. Not only should your site have the ability to search MLS listings, maybe a mortgage calculator and information on your market area, but your site must have unique and interesting content. Why unique content you ask? First off, search engine web crawlers work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, indexing millions upon millions of web sites. This data is scanned and given a grade, if your content is identical or even similar to say a thousand other sites, your rank will suffer, guaranteed. The best way to offer your visitors and search bots interesting and unique content is to do 1 of two things, write your own, or hire someone.

Finding inexpensive freelance writers is easy:

Place an ad on craigslist like this one.

http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/wri/643724152.html

Or use freelance writers like these:

http://www.bridgemarketing.com/clients-partners.html

http://www.sunoasis.com/freelance.html

http://www.freelancewriting.com/newsletters/morning-coffee-freelance-writing-jobs.php

Protecting your unique content once you have it uploaded to your site is another issue entirely. There are a multitude of content pirates on the Internet. These lazy web designers and their accomplices scour the Internet and copy unique content with the hopes of driving up their own rankings while in the meantime diminishing yours. Copyscape is a tool we use to protect ours as well as our clients pages. If you find someone who has scraped your content, immediately send them a stern email to let them know that you are aware they are pirates and if your copy is not removed from their site within 24 hours you will seek legal action to enforce and protect your intellectual property. After all this is your business and your life, protect it.

How to SEO Flash

Article Posted 2006 May 12, Friday
by Jonathan Hochman from
As of 2006 April 11, a new release of Microsoft’s popular Internet Explorer (IE) browser includes code that prevents Flash controls from working properly on many web sites. The Flash insertion method below resolves this serious problem.

Flash has a bad reputation, undeserved in our opinion, for harming search visibility. Why are SEO consultants concerned about Flash? A few popular WYSIWYG development tools generate invalid, inaccessible HTML code for embedding Flash, and many designers don’t know enough about accessibility programming, search engine optimization (SEO) and the benefits of code validation. As a result, most web pages using Flash aren’t programmed correctly.

Requirements for Successful Use of Flash

Flash animation is a great way to present complex content because it allows the designer to put more content in a finite space, without wrecking page design. If you sell technology, Flash is an ideal way to present a slide show or movie that explains your products’ benefits. With a bit of hand coded HTML, we can satisfy these objectives:

  • Clean design using Flash
  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Accessibility for people with different abilities
  • Code validation
  • Correct functionality with IE

If you have a site built entirely with Flash, you don’t really have a website, because there’s no page structure. In that case we recommend building an HTML site, and chopping up your Flash into separate pieces to be installed on each page.

SEO Flash Programming

Our recommended SEO method for optimizing Flash uses a DIV with search engine accessible content, and JavaScript to detect when browsers are capable of viewing Flash. When the browser has Flash capability, the Javascript manipulates the page’s document object model (DOM) to replace the alternative content with the Flash movie. Search engine spiders don’t run the Javascript, so they see and index the alternative content. The alternative content may contain links, heading, styled text, images - anything you can add to an ordinary HTML page. Simply apply your normal SEO copy editing and coding skills to the alternative content, and Flash becomes a non-issue.

Programming Flash accessibility isn’t spamming, as long as the alternative content accurately reflects the visible movie. In fact, alternative content is mandatory if you want to build an accessible site.

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) specifically states that multimedia content should have an alternative representation available. Accessibility programming creates the benefit of presenting visual information without losing the visitors and search engines dependant upon text content.

Example: Making Flash Menus Spiderable

The sample code below shows a Flash heading and menu from the WirelessBuilders site that has been made accessible with alternative content. The menu will function properly with the latest ActiveX update for IE. Previously, the interior pages of the site were not indexed because search engines could not follow the links inside the movie. We solved this problem using the HTML 4.01 code below:

<head>
<script type="text/javascript" src="/jscript/flashobject.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
<div id="flashcontent">
<h1>WirelessBuilders</h1>
<p>What we do</p>
<ul>
<li>Site Survey </li>
<li>802.11b </li>
<li>802.11g </li>
<li>systems integration </li>
<li>network design </li>
<li>project management </li>
<li>training </li>
<li>professional services (consulting)</li>
</ul>
<p><a title="Services" href="/services.shtml">Services</a> |
<a title="About Us" href="/about.shtml">About Us</a> |
<a title="Contact " href="/contact.shtml">Contact</a> |
<a title="Partners" href="/partners.shtml">Partners</a></p>
</div>
<script type="text/javascript">
var fo = new FlashObject("/flash/newstyle.swf", "mymovie", "800", "105", "6", "#ffffff");
fo.write("flashcontent");
</script>
</body>

Please visit deconcept for a full explanation of the Javascript code, and download links. You will need to download the flashobject.js file to use this solution.

We do not necessarily recommend building menus in Flash, but if you have a site that uses Flash, and want to avoid the expense of a complete rebuild, this SEO method works well. If a site is built 100% in Flash, you can optimize the content, but you will still only have one page. For those kinds of sites, we recommend recycling the Flash by chopping it into pieces and creating distinct pages.

Example: Making Flash Slide Show Content Visible to Search Engines

A second example, from the Virtutech web site, shows how to insert rather long content into a fixed space. We use a DIV, and set it’s CSS property overflow-y to scroll. This prevents the page layout from breaking when the alternative content is displayed. To see the alternative content load the Virtutech home page on a browser with Javascript disabled.

<div id="movieAlt">
<div id="movieAltInner">
<h2><a href="/products/index.html">Simics</a> is used to develop the embedded software that runs electronic devices such as:</h2>
<li>Aerospace hardware</li>
<li>Automobile control systems</li>
<li>Telecommunications infrastructure</li>
<li> High-end servers</li>
</ul>
<p><em>Hardware:</em> <strong>Satellite Control System</strong></p>
<p> <em>Challenge:</em> Unable to test software with satellites on orbit.  How to verify new software?</p>
<p> <em>Resolution:</em> Using Simics, the developers can run software quality tests on the ground, to ensure that the software works correctly before it's installed.</p>
<h2>Industry: Automotive</h2>
<p><em>Hardware:</em> <strong>Electronic Control Unit</strong></p>
<p><em>Challenge:</em> Need to develop software now, but the ECU won't be available for months</p>
<p><em>Resolution:</em> Simics enables programmers to develop and test the software before the hardware is available, reducing time to market.</p>
<h2><em>Industry:</em> Telecommunications</h2>
<p><em>Hardware:</em><strong> Wireless Network Equipment</strong></p>
<p><em>Challenge: </em> You have twenty programmers. Each needs a complete system for testing. They cost MILLIONS.</p>
<p><em>Resolution:</em> Using Simics to create a model of the target hardware, each programmer can have his or her own virtual device for software testing and debugging, without breaking your budget.</p>
<h2>Industry: Internet</h2>
<p><em>Hardware:</em> <strong>Network servers</strong></p>
<p><em>Challenge:</em> Software bugs keep popping up. Some take weeks to reproduce and fix. You are running out of time.</p>
<p><em>Resolution:</em> With Simics, programmers can run the program forwards and backwards to quickly identify, recreate and repair bugs.</p>
</div>
</div>
<script type="text/javascript">
var fo = new
FlashObject("flash/virtutech_intro.swf", "mymovie", "497", "287", "7", "#ffffff");
fo.write("movieAlt");
</script>

The CSS Code

#movieAlt { /*Vertical scroll bar on alternative content*/
height: 287px;
width: 497px;
overflow: auto;
}
#movieAltInner { /*Use separate div because IE's faulty box model*/
padding: 10px 20px;
}

In addition to these sites, we’ve used this Flash SEO method on a number of high traffic sites. The code has been served hundreds of thousands of times without even a single complaint, and the sites have achieved top rankings for keywords found only in the Flash content.
